Community Cost Calculator April 15, 2022
Are you curious about how much you and your community spent on nuclear weapons this year? In 2021, the city of Boston spent $206,935,549 on nuclear weapons programs and Massachusetts spent $2,051,610,977.28! On a local level, the town of North Hampton spent $7,214,772. Read more here….
Every April, Dr. Bob Dodge, President of PSR-Los Angeles’ Board, calculates the full cost of all nuclear weapons programs to our communities.
As Dr. Dodge says: “These are tax dollars much better spent on human needs, especially now as we struggle to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic and work toward a just recovery. Now more than ever, we must change our national priorities and invest in critical needs for our survival, not deadly weapons that must never be used.”
You can learn how to calculate individual or community costs here. A table with costs for major cities throughout the United States, as well as source references, is also provided.
In 2021, Greater Boston PSR helped to move the needle on several local nuclear weapons banning initiatives:
- Cambridge City Council unanimously passed a resolution to “Urge the U.S. Congress to fulfill its obligation to prevent nuclear war as outlined in the Back from the Brink Campaign.”
- Boston City Council unanimously passed a resolution “renouncing nuclear weapons proliferation and urging the United States to pull “Back from the Brink” and prevent nuclear war.
- 300 students at Boston Latin School, who had recently heard a compelling talk by GBPSR board member Dr. Ira Helfand, urged the Boston City Council to pass a resolution stepping back from the brink of nuclear war (which they did!)
- Currently working to ensure that a statewide version of the Back from the Brink resolution (S.1556) gets proper attention and is passed favorably out of its committee
