Climate & Nuclear Webinar Series

The Overlapping Health Impacts of Climate Change, Nuclear Weapons and Nuclear Power Global Challenge, Local Solutions

Greater Boston PSR is thrilled to announce our upcoming fall Climate & Nuclear Webinar Series, jointly provided by the Massachusetts Medical Society (MMS).

The goal of this series is to increase awareness of and encourage advocacy around the overlapping health risks of climate change and nuclear development, particularly on environmental justice populations.

Registration is now open for each of the three individual webinars. Greater Boston PSR members can enter the code GBPSR25 to receive a reduced rate for registration (to become a GBPSR member, you simply need to sign up to be on our mailing list). Each registrant will need to create a free MMS account in order to register. In case you have trouble creating a login, here are step-by-step instructions to create an account.

Webinar 1

A Global Challenge: Modeling the Effect of Nuclear Weapons on Climate and the Effect of Climate on Nuclear Weapons - Important Interactions

Friday, September 22, 2023 – 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. ET

This webinar will focus on how the deployment of nuclear weapons would create disastrous effects on climate. In turn, climate change not only increases the likelihood of war due to competition for resources (water, air, soil) and therefore increased violence on a warming planet, but also is directly affecting vulnerable nuclear weapons sites and legacy nuclear waste from weapons development, with disproportionate health effects on local populations.

Webinar 2

The Public Health Implications of Nuclear Power

Tuesday, October 10, 2023 – 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. ET

This webinar will examine the following questions: Is nuclear power the answer to the climate crisis? What are the risks and who are they to? What is the effect of climate on nuclear power plants?

Webinar 3

Local Voices, Local Solutions: How Frontline Communities Are Addressing the Overlapping Health Impacts of Climate Crises, Nuclear Weapons and Nuclear Power

Tuesday, November 14, 2023 – 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. ET

This session will provide a forum for voices representing the Navajo Nation, Rocky Flats, Plymouth, Mass., and the Marshall Islands to share health impacts to their communities and specific concerns and concrete actions that must be taken to mitigate the overlapping effects of climate change, nuclear weapons and nuclear power. Participants will learn how they can take positive steps to advocate for this important issue.
